Junky Botanical Planter From Thrift Store Finds

April 12, 2023

Photo of a barn wood basket & an apple crock.
I found the rustic barn wood tray/basket at our local thrift shop for $2, and also the apple crock for $5.

Scroll on down to see my easy makeover, and eight other thrift shop projects from my blogging friends too!

The basket/tray was really rustic and pretty dirty too.

I washed it with it with hot soapy Dawn Dish soap water, on the inside,

And outside.

That's all I did to the basket.

Photo close-up of an apple stoneware crock.
The crock has a dated apple design on the front and a very shiny glaze.

I gave the outside of the crock a light sanding with 100 grit sandpaper to rough up the shiny glaze. Then I washed the crock too and left it to dry.

We actually had a day in the 60's (here in Northern Minnesota) so I was able to spray paint outdoors!

First I sprayed the outside of the crock with Rustoleum Painter's Touch Spray Primer.

I then applied two coats of Krylon Chalky Classic White Spray Paint.

Yes it was a 60 degree day but the driveway was the only place without snow cover!

Photo of Botanical Middy Decor Transfers from Redesign With Prima.
You know I'm into botanicals! This Vintage Green House middy transfer from Redesign With Prima is a recent purchase for $15.99.

The transfer has three sheets of graphics.

I will be using the "Blessed" transfer.

I pulled the paper backing off of the transfer and carefully centered it before putting it down on the front of the crock.

I then used the rectangular stick to rub the transfer down.  I carefully pulled up the clear top sheet, so it could be laid back down for more rubbing, (if necessary). I used a small piece of the waxed paper backing to burnish the transfer.  This helps it to adhere and also helps blend in the clear edges of the transfers

I sealed the chalk paint and transfer using Rustoleum Painter's Touch Clear Matte Spray.

The little crock fits perfectly in the barn wood basket.

The crock can display faux plants or even a live one!
