In a blog post about my July garage sale finds, I shared this set of three vintage suitcases I purchased for $10.
The biggest one was actually in the worst condition, with a little corrosion on the locks, damage to one of the corners, and other wear and tear.
Orange is not one of my colors. It used to be. Like in the 70's and early 80's, along with rust and gold. I do still like orange for fall decorating however, and decided to repurpose the suitcase as fall decor.

Fairly recently *Old Sign Stencils offered the buffalo check stencil in a larger size. As you know, I have used the smaller buffalo check stencil a lot!
The good news, the larger one is easier to stencil. The diagonal lines are a little wider and a little more forgiving. Also, you won't have to move the stencil around to re-align it as much on larger items.
The stencil actually fit the side of the suitcase pretty well. I taped it on with blue painter's tape.
I pounced on the checks using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.
I pulled out my *Old Sign Stencils Pumpkin Spice Latte stencil from last fall. Who doesn't like pumpkin spice?

I moved the rectangular stencil around to make it fit the suitcase side better. Just measure to make sure your words are centered.
When I was finished with the stenciling, I used 220 grit sandpaper and VERY light pressure to lightly distress the stenciling just a bit.
I sprayed two coats of Krylon Gallery Series Artist and Clear Coatings in Satin Finish
to protect the stenciling.

Signs are great, but stenciling on other vintage items from garage sales and thrift shops is fun!

I LOVE what you did with this vintage suitcase, Carlene! I'm not much of an orange either (been there-done that-wore the t-shirt) but I'm really liking this for Fall decorating. Mama NEEDS that stencil!

ReplyDeleteI love what you did with your suitcase. I like touches of orange all year long. I use it some in my living room in pillow covers, and in my guest room with coral and turquoise and aqua for a pop of color. The suitcase stenciling went great and I love the words. You always do a super job updating pieces.
love all the suitcases, and i own some of them myself - i should get moving on my autumn decor!
