Broken Vintage Stool Makeover

October 12, 2022

Photo of a vintage spindle leg stool.
I found this old stool at a garage sale back in 2018, along with a lot of other items for upcycling HERE.

Read on to see the stool makeover, along with seven other upcycled projects from the Thrift Store Decor Team!

I thought the tall, stool with spindles had some charm with it's makeshift fix with wire.

The broken stool with the wire got its first makeover in a 2018 blog post HERE.

The stool soon joined all of my buffalo check and rooster themed projects on the covered patio in 2018 HERE.

Eventually the stool was put away in a shed.

I ran across the stool in the shed a few weeks ago, and decided to take it out and give it another new look.

I chose a whiter chalk paint for the stool this time, Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Cotton.  I brushed on two coats.

Photo of a package of inexpensive cardstock modern stencils from Walmart.
I found this package of cardstock stencils at Walmart (in the store).

The package was very inexpensive at $6.45, and contained 8 different patterned stencils.

My stool seat was a little bigger than most, and my stencil was just a little too small. I centered the stencil on the seat, and taped it down with blue painter's tape.  I pounced on the stencil using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.

I had to move the stencil right, left, and up and down to fill in the narrow empty spaces along the edges.  Since this was a cheap stencil, there were no registration marks. I had to measure with a ruler and try my best to continue the pattern.

I think the stenciling turned out pretty well.

I sealed the paint and stencil with a couple coats of Painter's Touch Clear Matte Spray.

I like the neutral modern Boho pattern.

I am going to leave the stool in the house this time, and not use it on the patio.
