A Vintage Birdcage Stand Repurposed As A Fern Stand

June 01, 2021

I found this iron birdcage stand at a local antiques and consignment shop.

I brush painted it with two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar.

I painted the outside of an old galvanized bucket with two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.

I then pulled out one of my recent decor transfer tubes, Redesign With Prima Spring Flowers.

This tube has four transfer sheets, for at least four different projects!

I cut a section out of the Spring Flowers sheet.

It fit the front of my bucket pretty well.

I peeled off the white backing and was careful to center the design before sticking it down. I found that I was able to move the transfer a bit on the painted surface, however, on glass or bare metal, once stuck there is no moving it.

Then I basically rubbed the design transfer onto the bucket with the enclosed stick.  More detailed information on this process can be found HERE.

I sprayed both the stand and the bucket with two coats of Painter's Touch Multi Purpose Clear Spray in Matte.
Photo of an S hook
I found this S hook in the flower pot section of our local Menards.  I painted it black.

I bent the hook so I was able to slide it into the loop at the top of the birdcage stand AND catch the handle of my bucket.

I added a beautiful Boston Fern to my bucket.

Ferns do so well on my covered patio.

The birdcage/fern stand fits perfectly in the corner of my covered patio.
