Garage Sale Antique High Chair Upcycle with Milk Paint

September 02, 2020
In May of 2018, I attended a great garage sale (the first one of the season) and purchased this old high chair ($5), in addition to lots of other cool stuff HERE.

It has been waiting in my shed for an upcycle.

I think I dragged my feet with the makeover wondering how to finish off the seat hole.

One weekend when my daughter was visiting, she offered to paint it.

The milk paint was mixed up 1:1 ratio with water, and two coats were applied.

I think the high chair must have had a cane seat.

At first I thought that jute twine could be woven through the holes, but that idea really didn't work out as planned. 😞

I asked my husband to cut a piece of unfinished bead board paneling to fit the seat.

I will be using the flat side of the paneling.

The board corners are curved to match the curved seat bottom.

The seat was painted with the same milk paint.

The new seat was attached with antique brass upholstery tacks.

The milk paint was medium distressed using 100 and 220 grit sandpaper.

The 1932 stencil is part of the Farm Blend Grain stencil from Old Sign Stencils. The grain sack collection from Old Sign Stencils are all awesome!

The milk paint was waxed with Dixie Belle Big Mama's Butta, using a wax brush and a fiber rag.

I think my high chair is a great decor addition to hold plants or pumpkins!

This milk paint color is perfect with orange!
