Stenciling Fall Colored Dollar General Placemats with Plaid Shirt

August 31, 2019

I found fall colored round placemats at our local Dollar General for $2 each.  Round works best on smaller round tables.  Rectangular seem to overlap on the corners.

Besides orange, the placemats were available in brown too.

I thought the placemats could use a little pattern, so I pulled out my Plaid Shirt stencil from *Old Sign Stencils.

It's time to add a little plaid to your wardrobe and decor, as the weather cools down!

Since Plaid Shirt is a two piece stencil, I centered the stencil with the thicker lines on the placemat, and taped it down with blue painter's tape.

Then, I pounced on the stencil using Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Walnut Noyer.

Next, I moved the stencil to the right to continue the stencil pattern.

I also had to move the stencil down and to the left to continue the plaid pattern.

This is the second part of the plaid stencil.

It's easy to get this stencil centered.  Just lay the thicker stripe stencil on top of this stencil and line up your already stenciled lines.  Then line up the squares (registration marks) on the center of the stencils.  Remove the top stencil, tape the thin lined stencil down and go.

The white lines were stenciled with Ceramcoat Acrylic Paint in Light Ivory.

I sprayed two coats of Krylon Gallery Series Artist and Clear Coatings Aerosol in Satin Finish on the orange placemats.

The spray should protect the stenciling and also help the placemats to stay cleaner.

The brown placemats were stenciled with DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Heritage and Ceramcoat in Light Ivory.

My local craft shop told me the Krylon Satin Finish spray I normally use had been discontinued, so I decided to try another sealer, Rust Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Spray Paint in Clear Matte.

Neither spray changed the look of the placemats.
