Upcycled Garage Sale Cabinet Door Photo Display

July 11, 2019

I purchased two of these vintage cabinet doors at a garage sale recently for $1 each.

I think they are mahogany, so after cleaning them with Krud Kutter and hot soapy water, I brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Paint's Boss in Clear.  Boss is a stain and odor block product.  I have also used Zinsser Bulls Eye Clear Shellac for this purpose.

Next I painted the door with two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen.

French Linen and Old White are my two favorite Annie Sloan Colors, and I usually have them on hand.

I then pounced on stripes with my *Old Sign Stencils Thick Grain Sack Stripe Stencil.

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I simply centered the stencil on the door, and taped it on the door with blue painter's tape.  I had to move the stencil to the left and to the right to complete the stripes.

I used Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth for the stenciling.

I lightly distressed the edges with 150 grit sandpaper, and added a light coat of Dixie Belle Best Dang Furniture Wax in Clear  to enhance the paint.  I prefer Dixie Belle wax to Annie Sloan wax, especially for non-furniture pieces that won't any heavy use.

A sawtooth hanger was nailed to the back for hanging, and three 2 1/4" Bulldog Clips were screwed into the door to hold old snapshots.

The first photo is a four generation pic with me, my mom, my grandma and my great grandma.

The photo with the old Rambler car, has my aunt, my two cousins, my mom and me.

The third photo is me.

I hung the cabinet door display in the hallway, with other upcycled/repurposed photo holders.

This unusual gallery wall is in a boring hallway.  I like displaying old snapshots in creative ways, and inexpensively.

Unfortunately, the gallery wall is really hard to photograph as it has no natural light and because it's so narrow.

  1. Love your photo wall and how your newest photo project turned out, Carlene!!! Happy to pin to several boards for you. <3 I made some striped two years ago for some chair covers I wanted to look French with thin painter's tape but yours would be WAY easier!

Enjoy your family photos and this sweet upcycled door,
    Hugs,
    Barb :)
