Upcycled and Repurposed Garage Sale Metal Card File

October 15, 2018
In my late June and early July thrift shop and garage sale finds' post, I shared this metal card file that I purchased for $2 at a garage sale.

These little file drawers have gone out of favor with computers.  No need for card files anymore.

So what should I do with my little metal card file?

First I painted it with two coats of Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Country Gray

Now what?

I happened to have four of these 6" Early American table legs from Menard's on hand in my stash.

I can't remember why I purchased them, but amazingly, they fit perfectly in the holes on the bottom of the file.  They screwed right in where the little rubber feet holes were. (Two of the rubber feet were missing.)

I found  8mm hex nuts at Menard's too that fit perfectly on the leg screws.  This made the legs much more stable.

I painted them with the Chalked Country Gray paint too.

I sanded the brush strokes smooth with 220 grit sandpaper.

I decided to add a buffalo check top to my file drawer with my *Old Sign Stencils favorite stencil!

I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Champlain to stencil the checks.

I painted the drawer inside and out with Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Linen White.

I sealed the file drawer and legs with Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane in Satin Finish.

So if you want to use it as storage for photos or recipe cards, maybe dvds or cds, or other files, it's ready for your desk/counter top.

With the paint job and new fun legs, the file drawer can be a decor piece too.
