An Up-cycled Garage Sale Wooden Cheese Box Side Table

October 30, 2018

Last June, I purchased this decorated wooden cheese box at the Littlefork Citywide Garage Sales.

I paid $1.

The cheese box cover had been hand painted with a Christmas wreath and the wood had been stained with a dark wood stain.  The artist had done a great job on the wreath!

I decided to up-cycle and re-purpose the cheese box for year round use.

First, I sanded the cheese box cover to smooth out the hand painting, especially the raised holly berries.

Next, I pulled out Dixie Belle Paint in Caviar.  "Caviar" is a wonderful rich black.  Dixie Belle Paint  is a reasonably priced chalk finish paint that offers great coverage and distresses easily with sandpaper.

I applied two coats of "Caviar".

*Dixie Belle Paint Company provided me with complimentary paint samples.
All opinions about these fabulous paints are my own.

I once again grabbed my favorite stencil, *Old Sign Stencils' Buffalo Check.

The buffalo check stencil can be used on furniture pieces, signs and your favorite thrift shop finds too!

After I taped the buffalo check stencil onto the top of the cover, I prepared to stencil the pattern with Dixie Belle Paint in Drop Cloth.

Drop Cloth is my favorite Dixie Belle white.

I then sealed the box cover's paint and stencils with Dixie Belle Paint Company Gator Hide.  I applied three thin coats.

Gator Hide adds water resistance to the box top.

Are you a fan of hairpin legs?  I am.

I found these small, black matte iron legs at Hobby Lobby.  I purchased them at 50% off, so they were only $5 each.

Three legs were added to the bottom of the cheese box with the screws provided, like so.

Hey it's a little side table with storage!

I left the cheese box bottom in the dark wood stain for contrast, and to keep it a little more casual.

I think it's adorable!

The hairpin legs come in a larger size at Hobby Lobby as well.  I think I will use them again!

  3. I just love this in the white and black! It would look so good in my kitchen! I'm thinking of ordering this stencil. But, just worried about how difficult this stencil is to use...without messing up the edges of each square???
