Garage Sale Up-cycles With Paint & Stencils

August 07, 2018
 This garage sale tray,

And garage sale stool were part of my late June and early July post.

Today they get a pink makeover!

I am trying out a new paint color, Dixie Belle Paint Chalk Finish Paint in Soft Pink.

I brushed on two coats.  Always wet your brush before painting with Dixie Belle Paint.

I knew I wanted to stencil my pink tray.  I didn't know that my buffalo check stencil from *Old Sign Stencils would be a perfect fit!

I also remembered seeing pink and white buffalo checks in a recent Ballard's catalog!  So pink and white buffalo checks it is!

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I stenciled the checks on with white craft paint, and lightly distressed the tray with 220 grit sand paper.

I sealed the tray with two coats of  Dixie Belle Paint Company Gator Hide.  Gator Hide is super water resistant.  Perfect for a tray that may need to be wiped off with a damp rag.

My tray could be a girly-girl bedroom tray, or a shabby chic serving tray.

Have you been seeing more pink decor lately too?

Now on to the stool!

One drawback to furniture painting is old stain bleed through or bleed through around pine knots, especially with light color paints.  Previously, I repainted a lot of pieces that had bleed through, after sealing them with shellac.

Luckily, Dixie Belle Paint Company has a product that takes care of that problem, and doesn't stink like shellac, Dixie Belle Paint Company Boss in Clear.

It really works.  I have used it now two or three times and it HAS sealed in the old stain.

I brushed on two coats of Boss.

After letting the Boss dry thoroughly, I brushed on two coats of the Dixie Belle soft pink.

I stenciled the stool with gray craft paint and a 10" x 10" Decoart Mandala stencil that I had purchased at Home Depot.

I faux distressed the edges of the stool with the gray craft paint, and my FolkArt Layering Wood Block.

I sealed my stool with Dixie Belle Satin Clear Coat.

Use this product sparingly!  Dampen your brush before application and dip just the tips of your brush in Clear Coat. Also don't over work the clear coat.  Too much brushing can result in build up in spots.

Of course, you can use this stool as a stool, but it's also fun as a plant stand, or a martini or beverage table between chairs.

I really like the soft pink with gray.

The chair back frame post is HERE.

The old ruler has small magnetic bulldog clips glued on for clip on photo display.  I used E6000 glue.

  1. I have a question for you. After sanding my kitchen table I love the look of the bare wood but need to add a sealer or something to keep the table top for getting food and water stains. What would you suggest I use that will seal the wood and not change the appearance of the natural wood look? Needs to be heavy duty also. Thanks for your advice in advance.

    1. I would use a satin water based poly. It will not be water proof but it will be water resistant.
