From Footboard to Farmhouse Junk Garden Deck Sign

June 22, 2018
My sweet friend, Trina, gave me this wooden twin foot-board to up-cycle.

I have attached it to my deck.  More on that later...

First, I brushed on two coats of Decoart Chalky Finish Paint in Artifact , which is a gray.

Because it was going to be pretty hot today, I started painting at about 7 AM.

I had two coats on by 8 AM.

Next, I pulled out my *Old Sign Stencils Small Farmhouse stencil.  The smaller stencil actually fit the twin foot-board perfectly.

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.

I used a ruler to center the stencil, and blue painter's tape to hold it in place.

Because I will be sealing the stencils, I used Ceramcoat black craft paint, and not the Multisurface Select craft paint.

I squeeze the craft paint onto a paper plate, dip my stencil brush in the paint, and pounce off most of the paint on a dry area of my paper plate.

An almost dry brush works best!  You can always go over the area again if the paint is too light.

Because the foot-board was a light wood tone, I faux distressed the edges with my FolkArt Layering Wood Block and Ceramcoat Walnut Noyer craft paint.

More info on the Layering Block faux distressing technique here.

I wanted the sign to look old and not brand new, so I brushed on Chalked Decorative Glaze Semi-Transparent in Smoked.

I immediately wiped off the glaze with a tee shirt rag, leaving a little more glaze in some spots.  The glaze basically darkens the paint and gives it an aged appearance.

The foot-board is attached to the deck bench with an "L" bracket, washers and screws like this.

Also a close up of the glaze.

I sealed the chalky finish paint, and the stenciling with two coats of Water Based Helmsman Indoor/Outdoor Spar Urethane Aerosol in Satin.

I may have to add a couple more coats.

I love my sign, but of course this is mid June in northern Minnesota, and the flowers need to do some filling out.

We will revisit the deck sign, and scrub pail planters during my July junk garden tour!

My sign is two sided!  It says "FARMHOUSE" from both sides.

I think the paint color and smoke glaze work well with my galvanized container gardens.

Buckets, chicken feeders, and milk cans, along with my new sign add Farmhouse junk garden style.
