A New Accent Color for my House

April 13, 2015

This is a photo from the Century 21 listing for my house when I purchased it, back in 1989.  It had brown shingles, new steel siding in "Wedgwood" blue, and white trim and shutters.  (Also very overgrown shrubs that I soon removed!)

Fast forward to 2013, the roof has been changed to three tab "weathered wood" shingles, a terracotta accent color was painted on shutters and doors, and all new flower beds and foundation plantings were added.  I chose a terracotta accent color,  because "when I don't plant in junk, I choose terracotta pots"!

I am trying out a new accent paint color today from Hirshfield's.  I think it's a more neutral shade.  Sort of a golden tan.  I think it neutralizes my dated "Wedgwood" a bit.

The roof has been changed yet again, a couple weeks ago, with Certainteed Landmark Shingles, also in "Weathered Wood" but with much more dimension.  So I am experimenting with a new accent color.

Why change accent colors?  Well...
What I like about Terracotta:  (1) The contrast with the now fading steel "Wedgwood" blue siding. (2)Terracotta, although an orange color, seems like a "garden" neutral.
What I don't like about Terracotta:  (1) Tough color at Christmas with reds.  (2)  All outdoor chair cushions and rugs need to have shades of orange.

What do you think of the new color?

  1. I love the new color! It really tones down the dated wedgewood blue and doesn't compete with your beautiful landscaping!

    1. I would love to paint the siding too but it has a "lifetime" warranty that is hard to void with painting. I agree, the color "neutralizes" the blue.

  2. I like the new color. A more neutral color. Probably easier to find cushions and carpets.

  3. IMHO Wedgwood blue is classic - never outdated. Tan and blue works, but I have a serious blue-and-white fetish, you know like the photo of your porch with the white shutter. But I think you're having trouble deciding because all of the colours have real advantages.

  5. Hi Carlene, I actually like that shade of blue and the golden tan goes very well with it and also with the colors of your new roof.

  9. The roof needed to be reshingled and we went with the same color, weathered wood, the only difference is the texture.
