House Plant Clean Up

April 07, 2013
I saw this post on Hometalk.  How to clean your house plants with milk.

Click on photo to see post.

I have some dusty house plants that I cleaned with milk today.

Dusty plant number one:  A Grape Ivy - Before.

After the milk treatment.  Shiny and clean.

Dusty plant number two:  Heart Leaf Philodendron - Before.

After the milk treatment and a big haircut.  Also shiny and clean.

Dusty plant number three:  Prayer plant - Before.

After the milk treatment.  Not so good.  The Prayer plant dried with milk residue, and I ended up wiping them off with plain water, several times.

All back in place in front of the fireplace.

The Grape Ivy got a little trim too.  It loses a few leaves over the long, dark winter, but fills in nicely in the spring and summer.

My living room is on the north side of my house and even with two large windows, most houseplants near the fireplace don't  do well, with the exception of the Grape Ivy and the Heart Leaf Philodendron.  Ivies don't last long.  The plants on the mantel are faux.

Have you ever tried milk to clean your houseplants?

  1. I find a spray in the shower for larger plants or in the kitchen sink for smaller ones works well and only takes a couple of minutes. I'm too impatient to wipe down every leaf. I think they benefit from a good soaking of the soil and draining with this method.

  3. Good Afternoon Carlene, Thank you for the tip about cleaning plants with milk.....I had heard about this, but have never tried it. I have quite a few plants, which I normally clean with a damp cloth and then use a leaf shine, but using milk would be a much cheaper alternative.
I shall add this to my list of things to do this week.
    Best Wishes

  4. I used to use mayonnaise to clean them. I would think is along the same lines, except less messy than the mayo. Thanks for reminding me to shine up the plants while I'm doing spring cleaning, because I know I didn't do it last year.

  6. Now that I see this, I'm reminded that I had heard of it but I don't think I ever did it. Looks like it did the trick for the most part!
