When our local Menards was selling succulent plants at $3 each, I decided to plant succulents in my mop buckets this year.

I am planting succulents in mop buckets in conjunction with the Thrift Store Decor Team's Special Succulent Party, so be sure to scroll on down to the bottom and see more fun planter ideas.

Above I have a window frame with a galvanized planter front to add to the mop buckets.

The planters are all situated in a corner of my deck.

This bucket has four succulents from Menards, along with my own perennial Sempervivums (Hen & Chicks) tucked in here and there.

I ended up of course with the succulents I liked, but tried to vary form, size and color.

This double decker mop bucket is especially fun to plant with the upper planter.

I cut coco liner to fit the top container so the dirt did not fall through the mop wringer. I know I have never grown a Spathecea succulent (Moses in the Cradle).  I tucked Hen and chicks in these buckets as well.  Some of the plants were the same as the last bucket but I also added a trailing Crassula and a String of Pearls plant to this bigger bucket.

Many of these rosette looking plants fall into the Echeveria family.  I have also added Hen & Chicks to this rectangular planter.

I love these low maintenance succulent planters. They are colorful and interesting, don't require a lot of watering, and no deadheading.

  1. Carlene, these "succulent buckets" are great! I can't wait to go get some more succulents to go with a few I already have. I am thinking to use an old wooden tool box to plant them in. I live in central Michigan; do you think they will winter over if the planter is on top of the ground or should I sink it to give the roots more protection from the cold?

    1. None of these succulents will live through my Minnesota winters except the hen and chicks, and some sedums. Not sure about your area.

  2. Just love these…how often do you water?

    1. I don't like to have the succulents in continuous wet soil but I water them almost as much as my other pots!
