Thrifted Stool Upcycle With Navy Chalk Paint & A Cozy Sweater Stencil

January 07, 2022

This little stool was a local thrift shop find!  It had a Hobby Lobby sticker on the bottom, and it's still available at Hobby Lobby online HERE.

I paid just $4 for it. It was a great deal!

After wiping the stool down with some hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water and a rag, I brushed two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in "In The Navy" onto the legs and apron.

After sanding the top to smooth it out a bit, I brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle in Drop Cloth.

I planned to use a decor transfer on top of the off white paint...

But after receiving this fun Cozy Sweater Stencil from Dixie Belle, I quickly changed my plan.

I painted the stool top with more In The Navy!

The stencil size was almost the perfect size for the stool top.

I centered the stencil up and down and sideways, and taped it down with blue painter's tape.

I moved the stencil to the right and to the left to add just one partial row of stenciling on each side.

Cozy Sweater is perfect for winter decor projects.  Pair it with a chunky cable knit afghan!

I waxed the stool using a soft lint free rag and Dixie Belle's Best Dang Wax in Clear.

Dixie Belle Paint Company provided me with complimentary product samples. All opinions about this fabulous stencil or paint are my own.

I actually found this off white yarn at Dollar Tree.  I just wound the skein into a yarn ball.

I had the knitting needles on hand, even though I haven't used them in years.

I like the little stool much better in navy with the stenciled top.

  1. Carlene, I love what you did with the little stool, especially the "sweater" stencil on the top. You are such a good stenciler. I have never mastered the technique without smudging even though lots of people say it's easy. Anyway, great makeover!

    1. Thanks so much Naomi! I am not a free hand artist. I just have a lot of stenciling practice and a dry brush. Keep trying!

  2. Oh I really like the way that turned out. That stencil is really interesting and the color is perfect. Thank you for continuing to repurpose things. There are not too many left that just do crafting. I appreciate that you are still doing what you do best!

    2. As far as I’m concerned it will always be popular! I love it too and only wish I was able to do more of it. I’m getting there little by little. Health issues kept me down for many years but I’m on the mend and hope to get back into it very soon! Keep up the great work!
