Garage Sale Cutting Board Christmas DIY Decor

September 30, 2021

Last Saturday I found this old cutting board at a garage sale for $1. I gave it a good scrubbing with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water, and a few sprays of Krud Kutter.

The cutting board turned out to be the perfect size for a project idea that I had with decor transfers.

This galvanized wall planter was a Hobby Lobby find from a while back.  It just so happens that the planter was the same width as the cutting board.  (I'm sure I purchased it at 50% off, because I never pay full price.)

After my cutting board was fully dried after cleaning, I brushed on a coat of General Finishes Flat Out Flat Topcoat to deepen the cutting board finish just a bit.

The Hobby Lobby metal wall planter had two holes in the back.  Two matching holes were drilled into the cutting board and ratchet screws were inserted in the holes, and tightened.

The metal planter bottom is flush with the cutting board bottom so my project can stand or hang on the wall.

This swag transfer fit on my metal wall planter so I cut it off of the sheet.

I centered the swag on the middle, smooth section of the planter.

I taped the swag transfer onto the planter with one piece of blue painter's tape.

Next, I lifted the transfer, without removing the tape, to pull off the paper backing. The tape helps to keep the transfer in place after centering. Sometimes these transfers stick to metal without much rubbing, so I made sure the transfer didn't touch the planter until it was in place.

I rubbed the transfer onto the container with the enclosed rectangular stick.

I used a razor blade to cut the transfer off flush with the container edges on the sides.

These Christmas faux greens fit and filled the container very well.

  1. I love this idea! I was wondering, have you ever tried putting a transfer over another transfer? I've been wanting to combine a couple, but haven't had the nerve, lol. I love using transfers and I have so many small pieces left over, I thought it might be fun to combine some of them.

    1. Yes, you can layer them. I haven't layered them with much overlap, but I have added script transfer over just graphics transfers. Thanks!
