Thrifted Child's Wall Easel To Wall Decor

August 11, 2021

I found this Jennifer Garner child's wall art easel at a thrift shop in Elk River, Minnesota.

It was priced at $2.99, and of course, I gave it a makeover.

At first I took just the top clip apart but later removed the shelf too for easier painting.

I roughed up the shiny surface with 220 grit sandpaper, and gave the piece a good cleaning.  I filled the screw holes in each corner with Elmer's Carpenter's Color Change Wood Filler.

I had to sand extra hard on the "We Made It by Jennifer Garner" that was pressed into the wood.

I think this Jennifer Garner line of creative toys were once marketed through Joann Fabrics.

I decided on Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray for my paint color, and brushed on two coats.

I also decided to add a scrolly stencil from my FolkArt Architectural Stencil Pack and Fusion Mineral Paint in Raw Silk.

I waxed the easel with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear and a fiber rag.

I added a sawtooth hanger on the backside of the easel for hanging.  It originally hung with a screw in each corner when it was used as a child's drawing easel.

The easel came with a 12" roll of white drawing paper and a small dowel.

Photo of brown paper rolls
I had a 30" roll of brown wrapping paper on hand.

It was cut into two 12" rolls and a 6" roll on the chop saw.

I then pulled the compass stencil out of my Hampton Art JILLIBEAN SOUP 12" x 16" Stencil Pack.

I purchased this stencil pack through Joann Fabrics originally.  It's a 14 piece, all paper stencil pack.

I stenciled the compass stencil onto the brown paper using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.

Next, I added a few accessories in the world travel theme, like the Eiffel Towel and Empire State Building metal souvenirs, an old camera, and vintage foreign paper money.

  1. What!!! That is too cute! I actually have a calendar frame in my basement that is almost exactly like that. I need get to work and make it trendy again!

  2. I love how you transformed it! The gray color is perfect and turns it into more of an adult multi-purpose piece. Welcome to the group!
