A Painted & Stenciled Crate In A Rustic Outdoor Christmas Display

December 02, 2020

I picked up this old, plain, wood crate at a local antiques/consignment shop for $12.

It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I had no qualms about painting it because it was so plain.

I washed the crate inside and out with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap.

Then I brushed two coats of Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish in Matte on the inside of the crate, and two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar on the outside.

Next I pulled out one of my favorite Christmas stencils from Old Sign Stencils, Christmas Trees.  I have used this stencil or parts of it on NUMEROUS projects!  It's so versatile!

As always, the stencil is awesome, and it will coordinate with all of my other Old Sign Stencils' Christmas projects.

All pricing and shipping amounts on the website are stated in Canadian funds, and will be converted to US funds.

I sealed the paint and stenciling with more of the Polycrylic in Matte, and added four 1 1/4" casters from Menards to the bottom of the crate.

Here is the finished rustic crate.

I placed a smaller faux tree in the crate, decorated it with crocheted snowflake ornaments, and placed it on my covered patio.

Other projects I created this year for outdoor covered patio decor include:
A Sweater Tree Sign

A Rustic Sweater Chair

A Snow Day Sign

I think I can take the ornaments off of the spruce tip buckets, put away the faux tree, Christmas crate, and saw, and leave the rest of the display up for a few months after Christmas.
