Thrifted Lap Desk Repurposed As A Seed Box

April 05, 2020
Over Christmas, I purchased this 1980's wooden lap desk from a Goodwill store in the Twin Cities. I paid $3.99.

These little lap desks were quite popular for letter writing before email.

After washing up the lap desk with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap water,  I used Krud Kutter spray on any stains I encountered.

I then brushed on a couple coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Farmhouse Green.
I chose one of my newer French style stencils, from Maison de Stencils on the lap desk lid.

On the top of the lap desk lid, I swirled on just the wreath and fleur de lis using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.

I added the stencil wreath, fleur de lis, and flower market part of the stencil on the inside of the lid.

These two packs of terracotta pots are sold at Dollar Tree.

I purchased two packs.

I painted the four pots with Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Soft Pink, Farmhouse Green, Vintage Duck Egg, and Fluff.

I faux distressed the pot edges with my FolkArt Layering Block and Dixie Belle Paint in Hurricane Gray.

I cut the two bumblebees off of this Redesign with Prima Vintage Labels Decor Transfer.

I rubbed them on to two of the pots.

I had two IOD French Pots transfers from an older transfer package that I had on hand.

I waxed the pots and my lap desk with a waxing brush and Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.

I don't know if you remember my last upcycled lap desk or not, but I used this eye screw and twisted picture wire idea to hold the lid up.

The wire keeps the lid from falling all the way back.

Faux plants, seed packets, twine, painted pots, Dollar General gloves and a plant trowel finish out my seed box vignette.

Farmhouse green paint, a French stencil and decor transfers combine to upcycle a tired 1980's lap desk.

  1. Love it, Carlene! What a nice Mother's Day gift it would make with a plant, gloves and seeds in it. Thanks for the idea if I happen to ever find one of these lap desks!
