What About Brass Accessories in 2019?

What About Brass Accessories in 2019? #vintage #brassaccessories
Recently, I saw this brass item at the thrift shop for $8.  I'd never seen a brass shopping bag before.

I once collected brass pieces, and displayed in my bay window.  I have long since disposed of all of them at garage sales.

I actually thought about painting this piece!

When I reached home, I looked up brass shopping bags on Ebay.  Do you check out the values of your finds on Ebay too?

My mom and I used to sell vintage items on Ebay in the mid to late 1990's, and I can usually locate my finds on Ebay.
This listing looks exactly like my shopping bag.  The seller has two for sale, for $75 each, plus shipping.  (Well, that was good.)  Maybe my shopping bag was a good buy.

Of course, these are the asking prices, so I searched the sold listings for brass shopping bags.

Apparently the shopping bags were wastebaskets or magazine racks.  I think I have a great find.

Now, what should I do with my brass shopping bag/wastebasket/magazine rack?

Maybe I could use it for a wastebasket or for magazines.  Maybe for wrapping paper rolls.  Or just maybe, for my yardstick collection, instead of the old crock.  (It matches the brass insert on my fireplace that I have debated painting or replacing for years).

Giving it some thought!  Maybe I will try selling it on Ebay.

I found this brass flowerpot at a garage sale for 25 cents.

It was very tarnished.

I found a recipe on the internet for a salt, vinegar and flour paste to remove tarnish from brass.

It took off the tarnish, but alas, the flowerpot was brass plated and not solid brass.  Most of the brass was gone.  I decided to paint it.

So I sprayed two coats of Rust-Oleum American Accents Ultra Cover 2X White Primer on the flowerpot. (and some other finds)

I then brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth with a sponge brush.

I used one of the three transfers from the Prima Marketing French Pots 3 Transfers package.

Adding a transfer is really quite easy.

It's just a matter of lining it up correctly, removing the paper backing and rubbing the transfer on with the enclosed stick.

I waxed the flowerpot with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear.

The corn plant in the pot is actually planted in a cheap plastic liner pot from Menards.

The newly painted brass plated flowerpot takes it's place in my living room on an antique piano stool!

What about brass?  Do you like it?  Would you keep or sell my wastebasket?

  1. I would definitely sell it :) It looks nice near your fireplace, but if you can get almost $100, I would go for it :)

  2. Brass accessories can add more interest and vintage vibe to space, so I'd keep it. Besides, it looks amazing near your fireplace. And I love that it's on a budget.

  3. Next time, try ketchup to polish brass or copper. Just slather it on and wait, easy peazy.

  4. I'd keep it in case it would increase in value. Your version is quite elegant & isn't hurting anything where it is. I would certainly keep an eye on th ebay sales.
