Junk Garden Stenciled Chicken Feeder Planter

June 09, 2019
I have two old chicken feeders that have moved around my yard and gardens many times over the years.

Here, they were planted with yellow Lantana on top and moss roses in the bottom tray.

Here they are along the side of my deck planted with double impatiens and ivies on top and hen and chicks on the bottom.

I thought it might be fun to add this grain and rooster stencil from *Old Sign Stencils to my taller chicken feeder.

All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I cleaned the area to be stenciled, and taped the stencil on the top part with blue painter's tape.

I pounced on the design using Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black.  Make sure your brush is very dry.  Do a second coat if the first coat is not dark enough.

I then sprayed the stenciling with a couple coats of Krylon Gallery Series Artist and Clear Coatings Aerosol in Satin Finish.

I have a few other galvanized pieces that spend their time outdoors and the stenciling is still in great shape.  I add a couple more coats of sealer each spring.

Isn't this stencil just made for this piece?

I planted my chicken feeders with double red and double white impatiens and a sweet potato vine.

This year I put pebbles in the bottom of the feeder.  The feeder trays have holes drilled in them to empty rainwater.

I love my rock and metal rooster.  I purchased him at a local greenhouse several years ago.

These plants have some growing to do, and I will be adding some mulch here.

Farmhouse fun in the flower garden!

  1. I love all your junk garden ideas! And, yes, that stencil is PERFECT on the chicken feeder! I was wondering, do you ever have a problem with the galvanized planters rusting out by the end of the season? Do you seal them with anything?

    1. I don’t seal them. They don’t rust really. They are galvanized and sit outside all year round. They are covered with snow all winter and filled with dirt.
