A Gathering of Mop Buckets in a Small Junk Garden

I finished planting all of my annuals the first week of June.  It has been a cool/cold spring with frost even into June.

Over the years, I have accumulated several old galvanized scrub or mop buckets.  They work as annual planters just like my galvanized laundry tubs and feed buckets. This old bucket is planted with two red Nemesia annuals.  Nemesia has become one of my favorite annuals.

This bucket holds two blue Bacopa plants.  These two have been planted for less than a week, replacing two lavender, spiky Angelonia plants that died from root rot.

This double-decker mop bucket on wheels is planted with two Diamond Frost Euphorbia on the bottom, and a red zonal Geranium on top.

The top compartment has a coco-liner (cut to fit the space) to hold the soil.

The two back mop buckets hold one Lemon Slice Calibrachoa each.

The top laundry tub, mounted to a thrift shop table base, holds red zonal Geraniums, white Bacopa, red Lanai Verbena vine, yellow Limoncello Supertunias, a spike plant, and blue Scaveola.

I had a similar planting in the tub last year, except for the addition of the yellow petunias.

Planted in the ground are 12 zonal geraniums in the four corners, and a row of Bada Boom White Wax Begonias around the edge.  The bronze leafed begonias are supposed to be more sun and heat tolerant than the green leafed ones.

I am trying a wax begonia edging this year as I had bloom issues with white Alyssum last year.  Some sort of insect problem.

Now I need some heat and sun to fill these plants out!

It's like a gathering of mop buckets!

  2. Such colorful blooms and healthy plants! I wish my yard could look like yours, but I live in the desert of California. All the beautiful containers would need to be watered twice a day. Do you have any tips or advice for those of us whose live in a hot arid climate?
