Thrifted Cutting Board & Crate DIY Stenciled Decor

May 03, 2019

I found this round cutting board at a Goodwill shop in the Twin Cities on Black Friday.

It was marked $3.99, but everything was 50% off that day.

I washed the cutting board with hot soapy water and  Krud Kutter to de-grease it.

I then brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Hurricane Gray, and lightly distressed the edges with 220 grit sandpaper.

As luck would have it, my new *Old Sign Stencils Fresh Herbs stencil fit perfectly on the cutting board.

I pounced on the stencil design using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Drop Cloth.   I then rubbed on a light coat of Dixie Belle Best Dang Furniture Wax in Clear.

A short black screw was added to the bottom center of the cutting board.

I hung faux herbs on the screw to "dry" them.  LOL!

Now for this crate.  I purchased it at an antique/consignment for $4.

It had some condition problems.  It also had handles on both ends.

I scrubbed it up, and then brushed on some "vinegar/steel wool stain".  (Add real steel wool to a  jar filled with white vinegar, and in a couple of days, you will have a weathered wood stain.)

I then stenciled the crate using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash, and sealed it by rubbing on Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil .

Here is one end of the crate with the Herb stencil.

This end has the Fresh Cut Flowers stencil, and the long sides have "Garden" and "Seeds" from the other two stencils.

I love both projects!

  1. Tell me more about your “recipe” for the weathered wood stain made with steel wool and vinegar. Have you done any other projects with the stain? Before using the hemp oil, is it the nice rich brown that is on the crate? Such a cool way to stain!

  2. Our family loves all your creative ideas!! Please recommend a poly finish to protect our wood crafts on our screen porch. Rain rarely blows into the porch, but we do need to seal our items. Thanks!!

    1. Thank you Bev! I have a covered patio that I have furniture too, that infrequently get rain blown onto. If I want more protection I like Minwax Water Based Helmsman Indoor/Outdoor Spar Urethane. It comes in spray and brush on.
