Paint & Stencil Your Garden Decor

May 01, 2019

I love to plant my flowers in old galvanized buckets.

The buckets are practical!  They are practically indestructible to the elements, and they hold a lot of soil.  A lot of soil means that your pots won't dry out as quickly.

I won't be painting all of my buckets, but this season, I plan to paint and stencil some of them!

For this pail, I mixed up Homestead House Milk Paint in Fort York Red.  I mixed it almost 40-60, paint to water, and brushed on two thin coats.

I then used a rag to "wet distress" the pail, especially on the ridges.  Milk paint is super easy to wet distress.

Next I pulled out a new, fun garden stencil.

It's Garden Shop from Old Sign Stencils.  I love everything about this stencil!  The graphics are great, and it fits on containers, crates and pillows too!

I will be stenciling just part of the stencil on my bucket.

I taped it onto the pail with blue painters tape.

I used Fusion Mineral Paints for the stenciling as follows: Garden Coal Black, plant Algonquin, and garden tool Champlain.

I did not distress the stenciling, but I applied Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil with a rag to protect and darken the paint and stenciling.

  1. at first I groaned when you said you were going to paint a galvanized bucket, but I like the way you did that - looks great!

  2. Love that old bucket, Carlene. I have one I put on my front porch. Last year Ihad coleus, impatiens, and an asparagus fern in it. It sits on a table which has a hole in it for the bucket (a free Home Depot women's shop) Perhaps I'll think about painting it. I like them au naturel also!

  3. I have four old buckets sitting by my potting bench waiting on new plants and a paint job. I don't have these stencils, but I will use others, probably just lettering. I'm excited to bring some color onto the patio which is a sea of cement.
