Upcycling Garden Junk With Buffalo Checks

April 29, 2019
In August of 2017, I acquired this garage sale plant stand.

It was grayed and rustic from years outdoors.

I added a Hobby Lobby hook to the plant stand, and decorated it with blue enamelware, and a blue license plate.

It was pretty cute.  But...

I like to change up my garden plants and decor every year as inexpensively as I can.

Which means shopping at garage sales and changing the look of garden junk in my shed with paint and stencils.

Even moving pieces around to different areas of the yard helps make my gardens stay fresh.

I brushed on two coats of Rust-Oleum Painters Touch Latex Paint in Flat Black onto the plant stand.

I will be using my Buffalo Check Oriental Weavers Marina Rug again this year and the black chair cushions.

The rug is indoor/outdoor.

I decided to coordinate the little plant stand with the rug and cushions, and pulled out my trusty Buffalo Check Stencil from *Old Sign Stencils.

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I used the smaller sized stencil, and pounced on the checks using Rustoleum Latex Paint in Heirloom White.

I then distressed the plant stand on the edges with my Ryobi Compact Corner Cat Orbital Sander and 60 grit sand paper.

I used 150 grit sandpaper to hand sand the stenciling, more lightly.

Since my little plant stand will be under my covered patio, I didn't brush on any poly.

Unfortunately, it's snowing here today.

I had to quickly stage this plant stand and run my geranium back in the garage.  Arrggh!

I took the little "roofs" off the peaks on the back of the seat too.

They gave it a birdhouse feeling.

I am still not tired of buffalo checks!

  1. Carlene, I love the plant stand in the fresh black you gave it. I am sort of tired of buffalo check. It almost makes one dizzy when looking at a large size item in checks. I think I'd like the peaks on the back of the chair rounded off. The geranium is beautiful and I love the black cushions on your white chairs.
