Re-purposed Farmhouse Style Drawer Shelf

April 11, 2019

I found this old drawer at a local consignment shop.

I think I paid $5 for it.

I repurposed the drawer front into this farmhouse style wall hook board.  Details for that project can be found HERE.

Here's what I did with the rest of the drawer...

After I removed the wooden knobs and drawer front, I was left with this part of the drawer.

I brushed two coats of my favorite black paint, Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in CAVIAR.  I used my Zibra 2" Stubby Handle Paint Brush.  Zibra brushes eliminate problem brush strokes.

I then distressed my painted drawer with both 100 and 220 grit sandpaper.  I wanted it to look distressed.

I planned to use one of the four farmhouse style  Prima Marketing Redesign Transfers  from the Always Fresh  design.

Three were cow prints, and one was a rooster.

I chose this one.  It fit pretty well in the drawer.

I taped the clear film and transfer to the top of my drawer with blue painter's tape.  With the transfer taped down on top, I carefully lifted the transfer to remove the white paper backing.  Then I even more carefully lowered the transfer into my drawer.

I used the wooden stick enclosed in the design transfer tube to begin rubbing the transfer.  I started in the upper right corner, and little by little began pulling up the clear top layer.

Everything was going so well.  In fact, I thought that I was going to complete the whole transfer without a boo-boo.

BUT, when I got down to the lower left corner, just a little part of the edge was still attached.  I guess I jerked it off too quickly.  There was no putting it back down.  It was curled up.

I was upset.

After I regained my composure, I decided to do a little sanding with 220 grit sandpaper, and not a lot of pressure to distress the transfer.  Make more boo-boos along the edges and a few in the middle.  Make it seem planned!

After all my paint was distressed, right?  I just couldn't lie to you and tell you I planned the boo-boo...

I waxed the drawer with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear

Since the top of my drawer had two big holes where screws used to attach the drawer front, I threaded some 1/2" Twisted Sisal Rope through the holes and tied knots in the ends.

A sawtooth hanger was added to the back for hanging.  I used a larger one.

I was hoping to find a small glass milk bottle for my flowers perched on the bottom of the drawer, but the thrift shops weren't having it today!

I used a small jar.

DON'T let me scare you off on transfers.  You just need to take your time.  It's really not that hard.
