Easy DIY Joann Fabrics Unfinished Wood Christmas Decor

November 26, 2018

I spent Thanksgiving and Black Friday in the twin cities.  As you know, I live in rural, northern Minnesota, so I look forward to some shopping.

On Black Friday, I managed to achieve the "Trifecta", shopping at Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabric, AND Michael's.  Almost everything I purchased was 50% or more off the regular prices.

I always search out the unfinished wood inventory in craft shops, especially when it's 50% off.  I can sometimes find unfinished wood pieces cheaper than I can find used items at the thrift shops.

I picked up this little cutting board shaped, unfinished wood easel at Joann Fabric.

This wood easel's regular price was $3.99, so I paid $1.99.

This item is not on the Joann Fabric online shop, but it may still be available in stores.

I applied a couple of coats of Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator to gray the wood, and make the easel look rustic.

Here is the easel after the Weathered Wood Accelerator.

This is an "Artist's Loft" burlap art canvas.  It's 4" x 4".

This is the back.

I purchased this 3 pack of burlap canvases at a Michael's store several years ago.  These little burlap canvases are not available at Michaels online, but there are other options.

You could always use a 4" x 4" square of wood, a 4" x 4" white artist canvas and paint it, or display a photo or Christmas card on your easel.

Or make a burlap canvas with 4" x 4" cardboard, glue, and burlap.

I again used this little paper Christmas stencil pack from Joann Fabrics to add a stencil to my burlap canvas square.

I am going to use the "JOY" stencil.

I used DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge to stencil on the letters.

I removed the jute string from the hole at the top, and replaced it with a torn piece of red plaid flannel.

  2. I have just come upon Organized Clutter and I'm so inspired. I live in Northern MN also, south of Bigfork 23 miles, on Round Lk. Do you live nearby? I would so love to meet you! (southeast end of Round Lk)
