DIY Kitchen Decor with Cutting Boards, Coffee Stain, Stencils & Wood Ball Knobs

July 10, 2018
 I love cutting boards.

I found this round one at the thrift shop!

I also found this small round one at the thrift shop too.  It was like brand new.  Since the larger cutting board had been used and oiled, I cleaned it with damp rag and Krud Kutter to remove cooking oil.

I have seen that it was possible to stain cutting boards with instant coffee on Pinterest, and I thought I would try it.

I purchased a jar of instant coffee at the Dollar Tree.  I poured some in a glass bowl and added enough water to to mix it, and not make it too runny.

I brushed the instant coffee on my two cutting boards.  Wow, look at that warm color!  But after the coffee dried, the color faded.  So I did coat two.

This produced a problem I hadn't anticipated, the boards were really sticky.  I wet a terry rag and wiped them down until they weren't sticky.

Wiping the coffee stain further lightened the cutting boards, but they still had a warm brown hue.

I pounced on the wreath with black Ceramcoat craft paint.

I sealed the stencil and coffee stain with Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane in Satin Finish.

This cutting board has some nice wear marks from knives.

My cutting board has 2" wooden knob feet also from Hobby Lobby.  They were stained with the coffee too.

They are attached with 3/16 x 2 Dowel Screws.  Dowel screws have a point on each end.

You will need to make starter holes in the cutting boards for one end of the dowel screw.  The knob holes are 3/16".

My cutting board riser is perfect for a real or faux plant on your counter or table, or on your buffet table with a bowl of chips, etc.

The cutting board should not be used for food preparation however.

I love it!

The smaller cutting board has a small Zinnia stencil from Folk Art.  I think the stencil has been discontinued, but any small round floral or leaf stencil will work.

I used black craft paint for this stencil as well.

The small cutting board has 1 3/4" wood ball knobs from Hobby Lobby.

I used shorter 3/16" x 1 1/2" dowel screws with the smaller knobs too.

This small cutting board had never been used or oiled so the coffee stain really worked better.

It may be made from different wood as well.

  1. I've gotta get my butt over to hobby lobby, the stencils are awesome that you used. Too bad the coffee got sticky because it was a pretty color. Great project Carlene!
