Rummage Sale Stool & Planter Upcycles with Paint & Old Sign Stencils

May 10, 2018

I purchased this dusty ivy in a wooden planter at a rummage sale quite a while ago.

It wasn't a must have.  It was kinda like, I better find something to buy because it was a fundraiser for a local cause.

I removed the dusty faux ivy.

The planter kind of reminded me of a firkin (wooden barrel like container).

And this is the stool I purchased last Saturday and posted about HERE.

Both are going to get a makeover!

First I gave the firkin-style wooden planter a coat of Rustoleum Canyon Black Satin Latex Enamel.

When I wet distress the chalk paint top coat, my black base coat will show through.

I brushed on two coats of Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in, Chiffon Cream

Wet distressing is very easy.  Take a rag from an old cotton t-shirt, wet it, wring it out and start rubbing on your painted piece where you want it distressed.

I rub harder on the edges, and lighter on the center areas.  This technique works on many chalk type paints.

I then pulled out my thicker two line grain sack stripe stencil from *Old Sign Stencils.

I lined up the stencil on the bottom of the planter edge, and taped it down in many areas to keep it in place until the area was stenciled.

I used DecoArt Americana Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge to stencil my grain sack stripes.

I used black Ceramcoat craft paint and Momenta 1" Alphabets Adhesive Stencil to add the word farmhouse.

I also stenciled on a "1871"  using another of my on hand stencils, Deco Art Andy Skinner Stencil, French Elements.

I replaced the straw colored rope with a thick jute colored rope that I had on hand, and sealed the chalk paint and stencils with Varathane Water Based Polyurethane in Matte Finish.

Here, I am displaying the planter with faux plants but with the plastic liner inside, I can add a real houseplant.

I brushed two coats of Chalked Paint in Chiffon Cream on garage sale stool too.

I once again pulled out my buffalo check stencil from *Old Sign Stencils.

I used the DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge to stencil the checks.

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples.
All opinions about these fabulous products are my own.

As you can see I also "wet distressed" the stool.

You may have noticed that my stool is missing spindles.

It had been wired for stability!  I think the wire adds vintage/rustic charm.

I will just use the front of my stool as a towel bar.

The spray was easier than waxing or brushing on water based poly on the legs and spindles.

My tea towel is from Hobby Lobby.

And so was my farm stencil.

Use the multi-surface craft paint type on fabric, or Fusion Mineral Paint works well too.

Easy!
