Easy Rustic Snowflake Ornaments

Homeroad Barn Wood & Hand Cut Snowflake Ornament http://www.homeroad.net/
I found inspiration in this snowflake ornament on barn wood created by Susan from the Homeroad blog.  The contrast of the hand cut white paper snowflake on the weathered wood was perfect for a Christmas ornament.

My version of Susan's barn wood snowflake ornament begins with Mason jar snowflake inserts that I purchased at Ben Franklin crafts for $4.49.

I used an old weathered shingle for my wood squares.  I cut them 3 1/2" square.

I painted the inserts with Annie Sloan Chalk paint in "Old White".  I actually had some trouble getting the chalk paint to stick so I washed the snowflake jar inserts in Dawn dish soap.  There must have been an oily film on the inserts because this did the trick and the paint adhered perfectly.

I gave them two coats, and then sanded the edges to distress them.  I also sanded down the brush strokes with a fine grit sandpaper.

I then glued the snowflakes to the barn wood with E6000.  I put a thick bead around the outer edges of the underside, and placed some heavy books on the ornaments overnight.  I tied on a piece of jute string for hanging.

These ornaments were very easy and only cost me a little over $1 each.

I hope to add these barn wood/snowflake ornaments to my Christmas tree this season.

 Thanks Susan for the inspiration!
