Repurposed & Upcycled Vintage Cedar Box

July 19, 2014
I picked up this vintage cedar box thrifting for $2.

What caught my eye was the dovetailing.

I gave it one coat of Annie Sloan French Linen inside and out.

I then painted on a coat of ASCP in Old White, and distressed it with sandpaper.

This is a photo of a vignette inside my china cabinet.

I am making the little box into a photo box, so I will be image transferring the camera vignette photo onto its cover using Mod Podge.  One thing I hate about the Mod Podge image transfer method is having to get laser color copies since inkjet prints will smear.  This is a very small town without a Kinkos, etc.  I brushed some Mod Podge on an inkjet image and when it didn't smear, I went ahead and used my inkjet photo.

Needless to say, when I applied water to the image transfer to remove the paper layer, I encountered smears.  I wasn't looking forward to sanding the top of the box and starting over.

BUT, was the image so bad?  I began to think it looked like a water color or an old photo with "foxing".  I brought my box into work to show my coworkers.  Was I crazy that the smeared image was a "good thing".  My coworkers liked the effect, and one wanted to buy it.  I waxed the image and the box.

The little cedar box now holds old photos.

I love the paint job and the dovetailing.

AND, I love the smeared image too!

Not sure I will use this Mod Podge inkjet smear method often, but I liked it on this box.  Luckily I found a color copy source in town for future image transfers!

  1. I think it ads to the vintage effect. It looks nice. I like the paint and distressing too.

  3. Absolutely looks as though it was supposed to look like that - in fact, it looks really old, as if someone made it a hundred years ago and it has been well used. If you hadn't said it was smeared I would have thought the entire effect was intentional, because it makes an amazing trompe l'oeil effect.
