I Love An Old Norwegian Trunk

January 05, 2014
If I made a list of my most prized possessions, this old trunk would be near or at the top of the list.  It is a family piece passed down to my Grandma, then my Dad, and now me.

The aged patina of this wooden trunk with it's worn Rosemalling, is just perfect.  The date of  "1817" is painted on the circle on the right.

The trunk sits in our den.

The iron key is permanently stuck in the keyhole.  I remember banging my knee on that key as a child, when the trunk was in my parents' bedroom.  My daughter has banged her knee too.

The side handles are also iron.

I use it for storage.

It has some damage on the top lid corner, but no matter.

I am still working on some updates and painting in the den before I have a full reveal.

Do you have a special family antique?

  1. What a great trunk! Love that it was passed down in your family. I can't wait to see what you're doing in the den. I have been doing a whole lot of NOTHING around here. Need to get off my butt and get something accomplished.

  2. I'm so envious of your family heirloom, Carlene!!! It's a gorgeous piece and would have a place of honor in my home, too. I have mostly small items from my side of the family, but a few special pieces of furniture from Bill's side. Nobody else wanted them, if you can imagine! Stay warm up there today and the next 2 days!

  3. OH Carlene! That IS truly a treasure. I love an old Norwegian trunk, too...and to have one from your family is really something special! My special treasure is a quilt my great-grandmother made...

  5. Carlene, that is an amazing piece! I love the little history of the key stuck in the hole. My mom did not have any vintage pieces because her home growing up was locked up for a while and someone broke in and took everything. She did have an awesome trunk that was my stepfathers. My older sister got that. At the time I wanted her outdoor furniture set more. I have a couple of prized pieces that belonged to my husbands grandparents. One is a little table.

  6. What a beautiful trunk! The fact that it's from your family makes it even more beautiful! I have an old Victrola from my dad and I love listening to it!

  7. That is an oldie but a goodie. Sometimes I wonder if I'm really vintage at heart - the first thing I thought of when I read your title was an elephant!

  8. That's an oldie but a goodie for sure. Sometimes I wonder if I'm really vintage at heart - the first thing I thought of when I read your title was an elephant. I have lots of old junk, but most of it is not handed down. My mom thought I would never want "that old junk" and got rid of it.
