Variegated Solomon's Seal - Perennial Plant Association 2013 Perennial of the Year

My house faces north so I am well acquainted with shade plants.
At least ten years ago, I purchased a package of bare root Polygonatum Odoratum Variegatum, better known as Variegated Solomon's Seal.

These are my Variegated Solomon's Seal in a bed under my bay window. The hostas in this bed emerged much later this year with our cool spring. One is visible at the base of the Solomon's Seal.
The arching 18 - 20" stems are almost ready to bloom. The blossoms are not spectacular. I grow the plant for it's foliage, much like a hosta.
Solomon's Seal spreads by underground rhizomes quite slowly at first. It is not invasive but very hardy in my Zone 3 garden.

I don't think I've ever seen it. I think I need this in my garden - also a zone 3. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't have any, but I've grown dead nettle in a shady area behind our fence. I may have to try this plant, because the dead nettle dies out if it doesn't get enough water (my hose doesn't reach). I like the little flowers on the plant.
ReplyDeleteI've never grown Solomon's Seal and don't remember ever seeing any at the garden center, although I've see it in photos and on garden programs on tv. It's really pretty against the blue siding of your house.
ReplyDeleteI love shade plants, there are so many beautiful ones. I just planted this one in my garden last year. It looks pretty good this spring & I can't wait for it to fill in the area around my bird bath.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know there was a Plant of the Year!! I grew this in Montana, but here in Missouri I only have the False Solomon's Seal. So pretty!
