Garden Junk: Tea and Toast on the Patio

May 10, 2013
My $5 Penn Air vintage electric toaster becomes a planter today in a vignette on my front patio.

This was a really neat old toaster and I had a small pang of guilt putting dirt inside but it only cost me $5.  That's cheaper than a flower pot!

The slots were extra wide in the centers, and the toaster had little metal doors that opened and closed inside to drop the toast into the bottom.  I forced the doors to stay closed.

Then cut strips of a coconut liner from the Dollar Tree to fit in the slots on top of the toaster's trap doors.

You can just barely see the coconut liner in the toaster slot.

I then packed dirt in the slots and planted with two types of Hens and Chicks.

I added a chrome teapot with a (newly transplanted, slightly wilted) Frosty Knight variegated alyssum, and a Blue Willow tea cup and saucer planted with Angelina sedum.

The vignette is centered on top of a vintage pie safe.  More to come on the front patio.

  2. Oh I just love this toaster!
Don't you just love the plant liner?
I had a couple of hanging baskets with that stuff...the plants died and I was intending to replant...but the squirrels robbed me blind, for nesting materials.
I should have snapped a photo...because really it was quite interesting to watch a pregnant squirrel get around so quickly, while thieving from my garden!

    I love these succulents!

  15. Carlene, you are at it again. Putting plants where most people wouldn't even think of and then they say, "why didn't I think of that?" A really cute and original idea and I like the grouping together..Happy Mothers' Day..Judy
