A Re-purposed Glass Votive Holder

February 03, 2013
I'm sure all of you have seen these glass votive holders while thrifting.  They are usually about a dollar each.

This one was pretty plain and pretty big, perfect for a cloche.  Some of these votive holders have etched patterns or scenes on them that don't work out well as cloches, because the scene will be upside down.

I also had this rustic spool.

So I had my husband enlarge the hole a bit on one end of the spool so the little glass nib on top of the votive holder fit snugly up inside the spool.  I thought that I would have to glue it,  but it fit so well and is not wobbly at all.  I can lift it up by the spool.  (But maybe not a good idea).

Here is my re-purposed votive holder/cloche with a vintage Sears Roebuck cloth tape measure that was my Grandma's.

Then I perched a small vintage sewing scissors in the hole on top.

I placed the homemade cloche in a vintage baking pan with a jar of crochet threads, two jars of buttons, and two more spools or bobbins.

I like the way the votive holder/cloche turned out.  It's perfect for sewing vignettes.

  1. Very clever, Carlene! Great way to keep track of those elusive measuring tapes and keep your scissors handy, too!

  2. Brilliant. Love the sewing notions under and on it. One of my favorite cloches here was a light fixture.

  3. Bravo! I know what I'll be looking out for this week at the GW and SA ;-)

  4. Perfect sewing vignette, for sure!
I have some of these votives...still in use at my house! But I also see them when out bargain shopping, too.
Great repurpose. The measuring tape is such a cute idea.

  5. Lovely Carlene! You really have a great design flair.

I see those at the thrift all the time, almost bought a couple, had no idea what I would do with them. Great repurpose idea.

    Farmhouse hugs,

  7. Very creative, I love it! I have seen those candle things but hadn't thought about using one as a cloche, next time I see one it's MINE!! LOL!

  8. Really cute use for those little candle holders. They are very easy to find and cheap too. Must pick up some to re-purposes.
