Thrifted Flower Pot Gets A Modern Boho Makeover

Photo of an orange ceramic flower pot.
I found this bright orange ceramic flower pot at the thrift shop recently.   The finish was very matte so I thought I could paint it very easily.

After scrubbing the pot inside and out with hot soapy water (it had been used with dirt inside), I brushed on my favorite black chalk paint, Dixie Belle's Caviar.

I had no trouble getting my paint to stick!

Dixie Belle has the perfect product for glossy surfaces or glass called Slick Stick.  I have used it with great results on glass or glossy wood finishes.

Now to add some stenciling.

What's this?  A Christmas Sweater Stencil from Old Sign Stencils?  I am going to use parts of this stencil on my flower pot.

*Old Sign Stencils has provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

Since my flower pot was not tapered, I was able to use this stencil on the sides without trouble.

I taped the upside down stencil onto the top of the flower pot with blue painters tape.  Then I pounced on the top two rows of the pattern using Dixie Belle's Drop Cloth.

Here is the flower pot with the two rows.

I couldn't stencil all the way to the bottom because the pot has an imprinted design too.

I decided to add another row of pattern from the Christmas Sweater stencil.

I then waxed the flower pot with Best Dang Wax in Clear.

I will either use a faux plant or a plastic liner inside the pot for a real one.  At any rate, a wax topcoat should be fine.

I think the pot (with the Christmas Sweater stencil) has a modern Boho vibe!
