Thrifted Framed Galvanized Sign Makeover With Old Sign Stencils Coffee Roasters

December 20, 2021

Photo of a Goodwill framed sheet of metal.
This is a Goodwill find.

The tag on the back indicates it was originally from Hobby Lobby.  It's a framed sheet of faux galvanized metal on a backer board.  I gave it a makeover!

I first removed the metal sheet on the backer board, cleaned up the piece, and brushed on two coats of Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Drop Cloth.  Drop Cloth is Dixie Belle's best selling paint color, and I use it often.  It is described as a stylish linen white with a touch of warmth.

I painted the hooks and all with Drop Cloth.

Next, I pulled out a fun, classic coffee stencil, National Brewers Co. from Old Sign Stencils.  I have used this stencil a bunch inside, outside, and for the holidays, and now it comes it two different sizes.

All prices on the Old Sign Stencils's website are listed in Canadian currency.  A handy currency conversion link is provided for your convenience.

*Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary samples. All opinions about these fabulous stencils are my own.

I centered and taped the stencil on the metal backer board.

I pounced on the stencil using Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash.

I lightly distressed the edges of the frame, and put the sign back in the frame.

Since the frame's wood was so rough, I didn't wax or seal it.  Dixie Belle Chalk Paints don't require sealers, and Fusion Mineral Paints do not either.

My coffee sign can display mugs (of course), but also seasonal decorations.

  1. Oh wow I absolutely love it!! What a great way to repurpose that sign. I sure would love to have found that one GW. Ours doesn’t have to many things like that, that come in. I think I may start looking at a different GW that’s not too far from here but it’s always easier going to the closest one. Nicely done and I love that you made it a coffee sign!
