A Stenciled Burlap Tree Tote And The Christmas Trees Mantel

December 07, 2020

The 12" x 12" portable garden bag cost me $1.49.  It is coated on the inside for use with dirt and plants.

But, that's not how I am going to use it!

I happened to have a 12" x 12" board that I stuffed inside on side of my bag.

The board will prevent any paint bleed through.

The stencil was just the right size for the tote, although I will be some of the stencil around on the tote a bit.

My first step was to tape the stencil down along the bottom and bottom sides with blue painter's tape.

I pounced on the Fresh Cut Christmas Trees lettering using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Caviar.

The smaller lettering below was stenciled with Fusion Mineral Paint in Bayberry

The stenciling worked very well on the burlap bag.  It's crisp and clear.

Here I moved the stencil left and down to add the larger tree stencil on the right.

I used the bayberry for the tree and the caviar black for the pot and ski under the tree.  I then measured carefully and stenciled two more large trees evenly spaced to the left.

I stenciled the wagon under one of the trees and the crate under the other.  I used Dixie Belle in Caviar and Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Chocolate for the crate and wagon.

Here is my finished burlap bag project.  Remember stencils aren't just for signs!  You can stencil on so many other items, and use your stencils over and over.

The hardest part was getting the trees even.

I placed an alpine style small tree inside the tote bag.

I  also stuffed some newspaper inside the bag to keep the sides popped out nice and square.

I added battery powered timer lights to my alpine tree (no messy cords and easy on and off), and a cable knit star.

The burlap bag and tree fit perfectly on my hearth along with a crock of birch logs, my stenciled Christmas boxes, and my repurposed drawer plant stand filled with small trees.

My chalkboard tree hangs from the mantel on a nail.

On the mantel are more trees.  The one on the left has its burlap bottom stuck inside stenciled wooden boxes from Michael's.

The birch bark cylinders have timer pillar candles inside, and more small trees are to the right of the candles.
