French Upcycle of a Garage Sale Breadbox

April 13, 2020
I purchased this $2 wooden breadbox at a garage sale last summer!  The breadbox was included in my June finds blog post HERE.

I sanded the finish lightly with 220 grit sandpaper.  (I didn't do a thorough sanding, just enough to rough up the shiny finish a bit) Then I washed the breadbox with hot soapy Dawn Dish Soap and a rag.

I chose to try Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Midnight Sky, a dark blue black. I brushed on two coats.

I chose this French Grains stencil from Maison de Stencils for the breadbox.

This 12" square stencil worked quite well on the breadbox.  Grains fit on the top, the grain sheaf, farm to market & fresh and local fit on the door, and Feed & Seed fit on the bottom front panel.

I removed the breadbox door to make the painting and stenciling easier.  I also cleaned up the hinges with a little ketchup.

I swirled on the stencil using Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Fluff.  I then waxed the breadbox with Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax in Clear and my waxing brush.

I just love how it turned out!  I think I am a fan of Midnight Sky!
