DIY Rug Beater & Dollar Tree Wooden Leaf Wreath

September 19, 2019
Sometimes decor can be really inexpensive, and very original!

Like taking a reproduction rug beater...

And a package of fall wooden leaf shapes from Dollar Tree!

First I used Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator to add a grayish stain to my Dollar Tree Leaves (package of 5).

I brushed on both Dixie Belle Chalk Finish Paint in Colonel Mustard and DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Heritage.

I used a foam brush with a very light coat of paint.  I sort of rubbed it on lightly so it was almost transparent.

The weathered wood accelerator underneath the paint made the colors much more muted, and almost transparent.

I laid the leaves out around the rug beater.

I decided to use round ceramic magnets to attach the leaves.

I hot glued the magnets onto the backs of the leaves in spots that corresponded to places I wanted them to adhere.  (not in the centers of the leaves)

I tied a scrap of fall plaid ribbon onto the metal handle of the rug beater.

  1. Love the rug beater. I'm glad you're using magnets to stick the leaves on. You have not ruined the integrity of the beater at all. Like the scrap ribbon.

  2. Cute little rug-beater wreath, Carlene! Who'da thunk?? I also like that spool Christmas tree. I just happen to have a couple of those spools. I might try your idea.

    Thanks for the inspiration!
