I found three wood and galvanized garage junk drawers or nail/screw bins at our local antique/consignment shop, No Place Like Home Again.

They needed some cleaning up, so I washed them up with hot Dawn Dish Soap water and sprayed them with Greased Lightning Super Strength Multi-Purpose Cleaner & Degreaser .
I still had some Homestead House Milk Paint in Fort York Red mixed up and in my fridge.
I brushed two coats of the milk paint on the wood ends with a small sponge brush.
I really didn't get any chipping, as the paint soaked into the wood. I did a very light "wet distressing" with a damp rag on the edges.
I found an easy way to paint and dry a knob.
Leave the screw in partially, and let the screw stand on a magnet!
I then used three of the new garden stencils from *Old Sign Stencils. Beginning with Locally Grown Herbs.
I pounced Fusion Upper Canada Green (color discontinued), and Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black on the stencils.
I just made the stencils fit the areas I wanted to stencil.
When I was done stenciling, I rubbed Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil on the wood only, to protect the paint and stencils and darken the paint a bit too!
Next I pulled out another garden stencil. It's Garden Shop from Old Sign Stencils.
I added the stencils where they fit best on this drawer/bin as well, using both Fusion Coal Black and Fusion Mineral Paint in Champlain.
Perfect little bins for flowers, herbs or garden tools!

And the last stencil I used on the bins was Fresh Cut Flowers.
I sealed the stenciling on the metal with a couple of coats of Krylon Gallery Series Artist & Clear Coatings Aerosol in Satin Finish.

I am so in love with these drawer planters! They look amazing. I love red and your milk paint is just the right shade! Marvelous!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness... I knew I loved an antique red but you have me positively salivating to get it out now! These perfectly themed drawer planters add such a vibrant and natural colour even if nothing is in bloom. I'm smitten!
