Thrift Shop Mid Century Modern End Table Upcycle

February 23, 2018

I found this little table a couple weeks ago at a local thrift shop.

It's really in pretty good shape.  The leather covered top table has quite of bit of water staining/fading however.

My husband said "don't paint it", but I didn't listen!

Since the stain on the piece is older, I opted to brush on a couple coats of Bulls Eye Shellac in Clear to prevent any bleed through in my chalk paint.

I chose Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Duck Egg Blue.  ( I had it on hand but don't use it very often).  I prefer neutrals.

I painted right over the leather top, which wasn't loose.  I just didn't know what I would be under it either.  Maybe lots of glue...

After the two coats of ASCP had dried, I gave the edges a sanding with 150 grit sandpaper, applying enough pressure to remove the paint, but not all the stain.  Next, I sanded the interior areas of the tables to knock down brush strokes, but not hard enough to reveal any stain.

I then stenciled the top shelf with Deco Art The French Inn stencil using Ceramcoat black and white craft paint.

The leather surface is not perfectly smooth but I think it still looks pretty good.

I also stenciled on the large part of the table with Deco Art Brocade Motif stencil and Ceramcoat white craft paint.

I sealed the chalk paint and stencils with Varathane Crystal Clear Water-based Poly in satin .  Water based poly is easier to apply, and doesn't need to be reapplied like wax, but water based poly can cause bleed through.

I think I've definitely changed this little table.

  1. This is the prettiest side table I have seen in a long time that has been recycled.
