I've had the same proble...Those darn squirrels! I've had the same problems, except it's burying walnuts. I now put chicken wire in my planters & use landscaping staples to hold it in place. I use tin snips to cut holes in the chicken wire to put the plants in, then cover the chicken wire with mulch.
