DIY Easy & Inexpensive Stenciled Pillow Covers

February 02, 2018

Today is the very first time that I have stenciled a pillow!  If I'd have known it was SO easy I would have tried it before.

When I was in Bemidji, Minnesota, a couple weeks ago I purchased a couple of  18" x 18" plain linen look pillow covers at Hobby Lobby.  They were 40 or 50% off so about $2.50 each.

Most standard sofa pillows are 18" x 18", and these covers will easily slip over your sofa's pillows for a seasonal or decor change up.

I like some of the paper stencil variety packs available like this FolkArt Die Cut Paper Woodland Stencil with 50 designs.

The downside is they won't last as long, and they need to be punched out.  Only the top stencil has been punched out.  Still if you only use 4-5 stencils, you will get your money's worth.

The crossed arrows stencil was one of the stencils in the Folkart Woodland Pack.

First I centered the square arrow stencil on the pillow cover.  I did use a ruler to measure it out.

Then I taped the stencil on pillow cover with blue painter's tape.  Important:  Place cardboard inside the pillow cover so your paint does not bleed through to the pillow cover back.

I used Ceramcoat Select Multi-Surface Paint in Black to stencil on the arrows.  It is recommended for use on fabric.

The stencil brush I used was from Dreamweaver Brush Set.  My stencil was very crisp, and I had zero paint bleed under the stencil.

I already had these Momenta 2" Alphabets Adhesive Stencils on hand from other projects.
And I used the Minnesota state stencil from this Artminds stencil pack from Michael's.

This is how my stencils were arranged on the pillow cover.

I stenciled the letters with black, and Minnesota with Folkart Multisurface Fire Engine Red Craft paint.

The pillow cover is washable, but do not iron directly on the stencil.  Use a pressing cloth.

This will not be my LAST stenciled pillow.  It's was so easy!
