Thrifted Recipe Card Stand Re-purposed As Christmas Decor

December 13, 2017

A couple years ago I found this dated little recipe card stand/holder.

This little stand was perfect for a makeover!

I first removed the sticker at the top, and painted the whole stand with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.

I then added a French "garden" Mod Podge image transfer to the top of the stand, distressed the edges with sandpaper and sealed it with Annie Sloan Clear Wax.

Instead of recipe cards, my stand displayed photos of my garden.  But now two years later, I am changing it up.

I got the idea that it would be perfect on the recipe card stand.

So I removed the metal rings that held the photos/recipe cards and filled the holes with spackling compound.

Then I repainted just the top part of the recipe card stand with more ASCP in Old White.  I stenciled the deer head silhouette onto my recipe holder with black craft paint.

This is a section of a paint stick.  I sometimes cut up free paint sticks and make labels or tags with them.

This one has been painted with Deco Art Chalky Finish Paint in Rouge.  I sanded it smooth and distressed the edges.   I also stenciled the word Peace on it with FolkArt Adhesive Happy Words Stencil and Butter Cream craft paint.

I tied a plaid ribbon on the spindle.

I nailed on my Peace sign with short carpet nails, and sealed my piece with clear wax.

Drill starter holes so your paint stick doesn't crack.

Garage sales and thrift shops are great places to find dated wooden pieces to paint and stencil.

  3. Wow, Carlene, you threw me a curve with this one! Love the result. I, too, thought you might use it for Christmas cards. Then I thought a tablet stand. :) Love your use of paint sticks, brilliant idea!
It turned out completely charming, warm and bright!
