Up-cycled Midcentury Metal Plant Stand

April 20, 2017
I purchased this little black metal plant stand at a rummage sale two weeks ago.

I could have spray painted the little stand but instead, I brushed on Dutch Boy Chalky Finish Paint in Antiquated White.  Once dry I opted not to distress the stand and sealed it with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating Aerosol Spray

I could have just added my flower pots at this point but instead I took a scrap of my cedar fence picket and stained it with steel wool and vinegar.  Next I took a Show-Offs Mandala type stencil from a Hobby Lobby store and stenciled on each rectangle with ivory craft paint.  The stencil was priced at $2.99.  Any small Mandala style stencil would work.

I have become obsessed with this type of stencil design.  I sealed my wood rectangles with Krylon spray as well.

Not ready to add real plants yet here in northern Minnesota but I'm thinking this piece will get a spot on my covered patio.

I love this corrugated zinc type pot.  I have several in several sizes.

I love it white much better than black!

  4. The white looks great & so does the stencil treatment! Did you just stencil blocks of wood to put in the bottom? Couldn't really tell. A friend of mine bought a similar piece from me a few years ago, and she used hers for serving food at a wedding.

  6. As a plant collector I love old plant stands. I have been debating whether or not I want to paint them or leave them in their natural state. The clean white look is nice. LOVE those tin pots !

  7. The stenciled wooden inserts are a nice touch! It will make it easier to have a collection of smaller pots if you wanted to.
