Thrift Shop Pitcher Plaque Makeover

March 06, 2016
I purchased this wooden pitcher wall plaque at the thrift shop a couple weeks ago for $2.  The artwork is lovely but the country blue color and busy floral pattern dated the piece.  Here's the makeover and HOW I DID IT:

1.  First I pulled out a wooden unpainted plaque, also from the thrift shop.
2.  I sawed it in half on the chop saw.  (I saved the front part for a future project.) I love this cheater build idea because the edges of the shelf have a nice finish.)

3.  I screwed my shelf from the back onto the front of the plaque.
4.  I sanded the design on the pitcher to smooth it out.  Then I painted the whole piece with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.
5.  I stenciled on the word "Fleurs" which is French for flowers with a Decoart Stencil.
6.  I then distressed the edges with 100 grit sandpaper and the inside areas with 220 grit.
7.  I waxed the piece with Decoart Creme wax using a chip brush, I have been using this easy-to-apply wax with various types of chalk paint with good results.

The shelf makes a great spot for a vintage measuring cup of faux lavender!

  2. Great job! How do you suggest people start with stencils when they don't want to spend a lot buying them?

  5. That is so cute and creative! I wish I had the vision to pick things up at the junk store and come home and make a masterpiece out of it. Thanks for the inspiration!
