Decorating A Vintage 1950's Bathroom

February 04, 2015
When I say I have a vintage bathroom, I mean the toilet, tub, sink, tile, and floor are all vintage, in addition to the bathroom decor.

My bathroom would be the "before" on HGTV's Property Brothers.

Or Nicole Curtis, HGTV's  Rehab Addict, would be searching salvage shops or ebay for missing coral tiles (like the ones above) to restore my bathroom.

Yes, my bathroom has vintage, plastic tiles in coral.  None are missing and none are broken.

I have a wall mount faucet on a vintage sink with an older custom built vanity.

I have embraced it's bright coral tile and outdated style with vintage details from the period.  I just completed a mini makeover of this bathroom after painting the walls Sherwin Williams Dover White and the vanity in Annie Sloane Chalk Paint French Linen.  I have also updated the decor and de-cluttered a bit too.

Here is my bathroom before the mini makeover.  The vanity was painted a distressed blue and the walls were yellow.  The lacy dresses on the wall belonged to me and one of my daughters.

Come in and see the changes.

First I removed the old vanity chair with French script fabric and replaced it with this ice cream chair I upcycled here.

I replaced the plates hanging above the tub with black tole trays.  I already had two of them and purchased a third at the consignment shop for $8.  I also purchased the gray towels from Target.

I also framed a couple of miniature Chippendale tole trays to hang on the opposite wall.  The trays were $30 on ebay.  I already had the frames.

I added small tole trays from Etsy for $15 to my head vases on the corner shelves.

I also painted a toilet tank shelf in French Linen that I added here last February.  Notice the toilet paper holder is a wooden spool.

I labeled the jars with Soap and Qtips sticky chalkboard labels that I lettered with a white paint pen.

Vintage gold frames have photos of my daughters, and a vintage oval mirror hangs over the toilet.

I upcycled two plate shelves with French Linen paint to display plates here.

  4. Love this! We have a vintage bathroom, but the previous owners painted the tiles. It is starting to chip a bit, and I'd honestly rather take all the paint off and have it back to it's original blue glory. Any thoughts on removing paint from tiles? (I am unsure if they are plastic or ceramic??) Thanks!

  9. Nicole from Rehab Addict would take these out in a heartbeat if they weren't period to the house. From what I've seen, she would rather work on Victorians, not Mid Century. She would probably recycle them if she could, though, knowing that they would be valuable to someone.

  10. Looks lovely Carlene ... would never know the tiles were plastic. Gray is a great color with the tiles and I love the tole trays in there.

  11. I LOVE your vintage bathroom!!!! So happy that you did not tear everything out and update it. I believe that a house should reflect the time period. There are ways to modernize without tearing everything out, you just have to be more creative. Glad you found a way to love and live with your retro bath!!!

  12. Delightful! My childhood home had the plastic tiles in marbled grey. They're still there! They still look fantastic!
