An Up-cycled Midcentury Black Mesh Book Rack

March 28, 2014
If you are in your fifties or older you will remember black mesh household accessories.

Like these black mesh magazine racks:

From Etsy.

This is a Midcentury black mesh plant stand.

Here is a Midcentury black mesh candleholder.
Also from Etsy.

Today I purchased this $6 Midcentury black mesh book rack.

I painted it a creamy white and distressed it a bit.

Of course I can use it to display and hold books.

I think I like the book rack with just the one open book too.

But what about using the book rack as a shoe rack?  Or maybe an iron shoe last rack?

I've been wondering how to display these shoe lasts...

  1. Love the mesh look from the 50's. I have two little tables that go with my chaise loungers!

  6. My parents had a two- tier magazine rack and on top was a ceramic ashtray. Not sure if links will work in comments but let's try it. I found the exact one!

  8. I am old enough to remember those things. We had a magazine rack similar to the one in the top picture. And I had the black mesh candle holder - 4th picture down. It was fun to decorate. It originally came from Home Interiors home parties. They made candle rings - circles of floral arrangements for various seasons - that slipped over the candle holder part, and then there were glass votive cups that fit into the candle holder itself. They are kinda hard to explain. They were a little larger, some were a little tall as well, and they had a 'knob' on the bottom that fit into the candle holder. Or you could just put candles in the holders without the votive cups. There were many ways to use these and quite pretty. Now you make me wish I had kept mine! During the Christmas season you can use the tall taper candles and lay Christmas ornaments under the candles.

I like what you did with the book holder and displaying the shoe lasts. It looks like a patio bench and could be cute with miniature pillows propped on it and other outdoorsy type things.
