Woman's Work: Utilitarian Kitchen Collectibles

July 16, 2013
I always am drawn to vintage utilitarian kitchen utensils and cookware, used by mostly women, in their heyday.  I found this bread board for $1 at an estate sale recently.

I think the coil stove element "burn mark" made the piece "extra special".  I know it was used for cooking family meals in the 1950's.  I recently picked up the whisk at a consignment shop for $1.

The cracker canister (Blue Magic Krispy Kan) was not my Grandma's but she had one just like it when I was growing up.  The glass knob on top had "stay fresh" crystals.  And, of course the wood mashers are one of my recent obsessions.

Old tins are fun too.  Especially red!

This is a vintage french fry cutter with a Listerine bottle of Rosemary on top.

I love to put my kitchen collections together in vignettes.

This one will probably be in place until fall.

I found this vintage Kromex spun aluminum bread box at a consignment shop for $8 about a week ago.  I am not sure if I will use it for bread or just for displays.  It is in very nice shape.

Do you remember them?

And lastly I purchased a washboard for $10.  It's rusty but unusual.  I don't have any with the rounded metal top.

I will be posting a garden tour very soon.  A few more perennials need to come into bloom first.

  5. I just love your kitchen collection because of all the memories associated with the cool old items. Those tins are just the thing. Can't beat a red folgers tin like that. Then there's that bread box. It seems people are finding those all over, but I've not managed to come across any. Love the way you put everything together as always, Carlene!

  6. I love the cracker tin! My mother had one when we were growing up. I think I need to find one for our oldest granddaughter who loves to eat Saltine crackers. Better than cookies, I guess.

Fun little kitchen vignette. Or would it be kitchenette? :)

  27. Carlene, the coil burn does bring visual interest to the cutting board. Definitely a conversation piece. I love the cracker tin, have never seen one like it. I too love vintage kitchen utensils. I picked up a few new ones last weekend at a yard sale. I have the same French fry cutter. I like how you displayed it. Never thought of opening it up that way. Mine is in the top of one of my basement glass cabinets. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
